------------------------------------------
During the summer of 1998, I had the privilege of going to Vladimir, Russia as part of a medical mission team for two weeks. Upon return to LAX airport, I was surprisingly arrested by the FBI on a false charge of drug trafficking. I was chained around my neck and feet, handcuffed, and paraded throughout the airport, shocked and in disbelief. That night in jail, I wept my heart out to the Lord. During that night, the Holy Spirit descended on me in a very powerful way and instilled within me a heart for the Great Commission, filling me in particular with two passages from Matthew and Acts:
Matthew 28:19 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
Acts 1:8 "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Soon, all charges against me were cleared, and since then, I have been to over 100 countries and treated over 100,000 patients in the mission field. I have been back to my homeland China over 50 times since, traveling from south to west, going along the Silk Road all the way through Central Asia and back to Jerusalem. As I told my wife one morning after being released from the jail, God has clearly called us to serve Him in the Great Commission Harvest, and part of that call was to start a church that would be dedicated to and not lose sight of God’s mission, a Great Commission Church.
In the summer of 2007, while praying for the right timing, I asked the Lord when and if I needed to do the work of Nehemiah, telling Him that I needed to have clear confirmation. I was then and still am a full-time medical doctor, and was still engaged in the frontlines as a medical missionary. Then, out of nowhere, a letter came from my friend, Pastor-physician Tung Min Wei from Myanmar, headed, "You are the Nehemiah of today."
Just as Hudson Taylor, another pastor-physician once said, "God is not looking for great men to serve Him, but only meek men willing to obey His call and remain faithful to serve Him." And just as Isaiah 6:8 says: "Here am I, send me!"
As we might know, Nehemiah’s work rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem was very difficult, and enemies were constantly causing troubles. Nehemiah 4:1 says:
“What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?”
Nehemiah 4:11 goes on further to say:
Also our enemies said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.”
Nehemiah had to work on both sides, building with one hand and fighting with the other (Nehemiah 4:17-18 "Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, 18 and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked." ). In the most difficult of times after the church started, God continue to show His Providence and Grace. I was so encouraged when one morning a five-year-old patient brought me a drawing of Nehemiah and his co-workers building the wall of Jerusalem. The promise was delivered in Nehemiah 2:20: "The God of heaven will give us success!" In fact, Nehemiah 4:19 further promises, "Our God will fight for us!"
Grace Mission Church International has clearly stated where we stand. Jesus says in Luke 12:34, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." In the four years of our church’s life, we have never turned back on our vision and goals, and have stayed true to where our hearts are. Although we do not yet have a building of our own, our church sacrificially gives well over 50% of all offering we receive to the work of the Great Commission. We have poured out our resources to the last, the lost, the lame and the least of our brethren, investing in the most needy areas for the sake of the Gospel. Missionaries and pastors we support come and report their progress in building churches seminaries, and dormitories in many unreached parts of Thailand, Myanmar, and China. A famous missionary once said, "the measure of a church is not just its seating capacity, but its sending capacity!" Grace Mission Church International has an unswerving policy that we will give at least 50% of our funding to the work of the Great Commission. By God’s grace, we are currently meeting and exceeding our target goal! God's work done in God's timing will never lack God's grace and supply!
As we continue to strive and make the work of the ministry ever more solid, let us remember Nehemiah’s exhortation in Nehemiah 8:8-10:
They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
We will always remember that the Grace of the Lord is sufficient for us. The God who called and enabled Daniel, Isaiah, and Nehemiah is the same God we believe in, the same Spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and the same Lord that said, "Lo, I will be with you even to the ends of the world.”
In Mark 16:14, Jesus rebuked his disciples for their lack of faith and stubborn refusal to believe. Yet, immediately after that, in verse 15, we see his grace and mercy as he goes on to urge his disciples:
“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
Hence, let us draw close to the Lord, and thoroughly examine every motive and intent in our hearts in asking God what we shall do for His Kingdom and His Righteousness.
We must heed the cries of the masses who are perishing without ever getting a chance to hear the Gospel. I hope that we all see that the harvest is great, but the workers are few!
We have but one life, and soon it will pass; only what's done for Christ will last forever. Brothers and sisters, by the grace of God, let us never, never, never give up!
Sincerely yours,
Pastor Hanson Isaiah Daniel Nehemiah Wong
